The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game of chance that can be played by any number of people. Its popularity has increased in recent years with a growing number of online casinos, as well as live tournaments held in casinos and hotels around the world. A new league on the lines of IPL is also coming up soon, with reputed business houses as sponsors, and this will further increase the popularity of the game.
Several variants of the game are played, but all share certain essential features. Each player is dealt five cards, and a winning hand must contain at least four of the five cards. Players may raise (better) or fold their bets during the betting phase of the game. Players may also bluff, if they think that their opponents have superior hands.
A standard 52-card pack is used, sometimes with one or two jokers. The jokers count as wild cards, and they can be used to complete a flush, a straight, or certain special hands.
A pair of cards is made up of two matching cards of the same rank, and a three-card straight is a series of consecutive ranks that are all the same suit. A full house is three matching cards of the same rank, and if the kicker is the highest, then the hand wins. If there is a tie, then the pot is split. In some games, players establish a special fund called the “kitty.” This is built up by taking a low-denomination chip from every pot in which there is more than one raise. The chips in the kitty are used to pay for new decks of cards and other expenses.
