What is a Casino?

Casino

A casino is a public room or building where a variety of games of chance are played. These primarily include gambling activities such as slot machines, blackjack and poker.

Casinos are the most popular form of gaming in North America and the world, and are also a major tourist attraction. A number of states have legalized gambling, and some Native American tribes have developed a large industry as well.

The earliest casinos were built in Nevada and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Those places quickly gained an international reputation for gambling, and by the late 1970s other states began to allow gambling as well.

Security

Modern casino security is divided between a physical security force and a specialized surveillance department. The physical force patrols the casino and responds to calls for assistance, while the specialized surveillance department operates the closed circuit television system that is known in the industry as the “eye in the sky.”

Interior design

The goal of a casino is to create an atmosphere that makes patrons feel they are having a special experience. Lush carpets and richly tiled hallways complement carefully designed lighting.

Bright colors are often used for floor and wall coverings to attract gamblers and keep them coming back. Red is a common color for this reason, as it’s thought to make people lose track of time and to cause them to think they’re having an exciting and unique experience.

Most casinos offer a loyalty club that rewards gamblers with free slots play, meals and entertainment. These clubs are similar to airline frequent-flyer programs and are an excellent way to market the casino and develop a loyal customer base.
